Over kill!! Just go to Huntingnet.com and you will see from their resident experts that all you gung-ho heavy hitter types are wasting precious FRNs on those "deer calibers" when a plain old .223 will harvest any deer in North America that is with in 500 yards.
Please accept this :sarc: smiley as a tooken of my graditude!!! Nice deer load and performance from you .308 regardless of what the idiots on that other forum have to say. |

Re: Deer Hunting Bullet that impressed me
I've used Barnes 50 cal. solid copper muzzle loading bullets for years. They are awesome in that they petal out to about three+ times their original diameter, and always shoot through and leave a gaping hole exit wound about one inch in diameter. Placed in the boiler plant area there's always a blood trail I can see 8 to 10 feet ahead of me.
I must qualify "always shoot through" by saying that I never shoot more than 100 yards because a muzzle loader is a max 100 yard gun PERIOD. I don't care what advertisers say. If a toll was taken of the number of deer crippled & lost each year by hunters that believe the advertising and shoot up to 200 yards, I would bet that both the number of deer crippled/lost, and the percentage of deer lost when shot at 100+ yards, would be very high. Anybody who has shot a deer (particularly with a ML with it's smoke and you better know precisely where the deer was when you bust the cap because you normally see NOTHING of the deer after you shoot) knows that the further away the animal is the different the area looks when you get to it and start looking for blood. I harvest 5 or 6 deer every year and have never lost one I shot with one of these bullets. (Awesome on coyotes also!) The down side for some people if there is one, is cost. I don't view this as "down" in that I ask myself (1) how many am I going to shoot per year...maybe 8 or 10 counting the trip to the range, and (2) I never lose an animal. |

In response to your 100 yard max comment.
I don't buy the hype of the 200+ yard ML. But I will vouch for 150 yards. And at 150 yards I have shot through every deer I have taken at that range. Granted I much rather wait for a "easy" fifty yard shot, but the "nut" behind my Encore firing a 240 grain .45 call XTP sitting on top a 150 grains of Triple Seven has no problem with that shot. Change the "nut" and you may not get the performance, but that is not the guns fault. |
